A new study by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is showing that a new drug for erectile dysfunction could have serious side effects. The findings from a study of more than 50,000 patients with erectile dysfunction in Australia and New Zealand, also dubbed the Viagra for men, were published today in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
"Erectile dysfunction can be a complex condition," said Dr. Joseph L. Kavoussis, director of the Urology and Cardiovascular Center of the University of Melbourne.
The study, published in theJournal of Urology, examined whether patients with erectile dysfunction were at risk of side effects that they could have had before starting the medication. They were given either Viagra (sildenafil citrate), which is a PDE5 inhibitor, or sildenafil, which is a PDE5 inhibitor. The drugs were taken once a day for four weeks.
After three weeks of treatment, the patients with erectile dysfunction had a reduction in the number of erections they had and a decrease in the frequency of intercourse attempts. The reduction in erections was statistically significant in both groups of patients.
"This is the first study to show that Viagra, a PDE5 inhibitor, may be associated with erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Andrew L. Brown, director of the Sexual Medicine and Menopause Institute at the University of New South Wales, Australia.
