A recent study by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that men with erectile dysfunction (ED) are twice as likely to experience premature ejaculation than men without ED.
Researchers looked at nearly 1,000 men in the United States who were taking or were taking drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and found that nearly two-thirds experienced a statistically significant increase in the frequency of men with ED. These men had low sex drive or an erection that was painful to have sexual contact.
Researchers also found that men who were taking SSRIs had a 69 percent higher frequency of PE than men who were taking a placebo group. They found that men with ED were twice as likely to have been diagnosed with premature ejaculation than men without ED. The increase was especially pronounced in men who were older than 40 or taking antidepressants.
But the researchers found that this difference in the men’s performance was not due to SSRIs’ higher incidence of premature ejaculation. “The finding that men who were taking SSRIs were twice as likely to have PE than men who were taking a placebo is an interesting finding,” lead author Robert Kesselheim, from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, told the paper in an interview with.
“The fact that men who were taking SSRIs were twice as likely to have PE than men who were taking a placebo is significant because it suggests that men may have a higher incidence of PE when they have ED than when they are on antidepressants,” Kesselheim added. “This finding is consistent with the theory that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as Viagra, increase the amount of serotonin in the brain, which can help delay ejaculation.”
Although the researchers note that the increased serotonin levels in the brain are thought to be a marker of ED, they point out that other studies have found no association between SSRIs and PE. They also note that men taking SSRIs are more likely to report sexual dysfunction, and that this effect is more pronounced among men with low sex drive.
Kesselheim adds that his research was “very preliminary, and so there was no clear association with PE.”
The authors of the study noted that men taking SSRIs had a 69 percent higher frequency of premature ejaculation than men taking a placebo. However, they note that the researchers did not examine the impact of these sexual problems on men’s sexual performance.
